The Projects

Fellowship Program — Conservation professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean have participated in an annual, month-long fellowship program on land conservation and stewardship. The intensive program is practical and problem-solving in its approach, introducing participants to conservation issues in the northeastern United States and enabling them to begin a dialogue among themselves and with their North American counterparts.

Landscape Stewardship Exchange — This practically oriented exchange format brings together small teams of professionals to visit an area facing a conservation and development issue. The group tours the area, talking with people of varying viewpoints, and makes recommendations. A lasting impact is the local team that comes together to plan the event.

"Tools for Stewardship" Workshops — Workshops featuring alumni of the Fellowship program as well as US and Canadian experts have brought stewardship concepts to broader audiences in Latin America and the Caribbean. These three- or four-day workshops rely on practical exercises, inter-active discussions, and field trips to introduce participants to a range of practical tools for land conservation.

Peer-to-Peer Exchanges — Increasingly, we are organizing exchange groups comprised not only of conservation professionals, but a spectrum of conservation and development interests. The objective of these programs is to promote dialogue among diverse stake-holders, both at home and in the host country, and to expose differing sectors of society to other viewpoints in non-threatening ways.

Partnership Assignments — We have responded to requests of our NGO partners for training in specific skills. For example, we provided legal consultancies from Canadian land trusts to a land trust on St. Lucia.

Regional Working Group/Alumni Retreats— Our fellowship, exchange and assistance programs are aimed at developing a strong, organized constituency for civil society and sustainable development acting regionally. Periodic retreats of “alumni” of these programs in both the Caribbean and Latin America have provided continued interaction among peer organizations, regional coordination, as well as strategic planning for the continuation of stewardship programs.
